HEADLINES FROM LAST WEEK

Turning in a mark of 14′ 7.25″ (4.45 meters) in the pole vault at the Virginia Tech Invitational, track and field’s Julia Fixsen came in first nationally with that mark and earned ACC Field Performer of the Week.

No. 12 women’s basketball went up north to face off against the Pitt Panthers on Thursday and walked out victorious 69-62, led by junior Georgia Amoore’s team-high 21 points. Senior Elizabeth Kitley and graduate student Taylor Soule also recorded double-doubles in the win.

Senior women’s tennis player Sophie Mitchell sat down to answer some questions on Thursday. Mitchell claimed a doubles win at the Tribe Invitational this past fall.

Track & field hosted the Hokie Invitational over the weekend and had many top-notch finishes at Rector Field House.

No. 8 wrestling took down No. 5 NC State 16-14 in front of a record-breaking crowd (5,943) Friday night. The Hokies won six out of 10 bouts – including the highlighted return of No. 6 Bryce Andonian – to start 1-0 in conference competition.

Swim & dive traveled to University Park, Pennsylvania on Saturday to face off against Penn State and the men’s and women’s squads came out victorious 172-121 and 155-140, respectively. The Hokies collected 23 first-place wins and broke 10 pool records in the process.

No. 12 women’s basketball capped off the week with a 74-57 win over Wake Forest on Sunday. Kitley dominated the entire game, racking up a 28 point, 12 rebound double-double, all while becoming the program’s all-time leader in field goals made (704).
