hcl tech: Wipro, HCL Tech continue to add employees in Q2

Bengaluru-headquartered software services firm, Wipro, said it had onboarded 14,000 freshers in the first six months of fiscal 2022, with a net increase in headcount of 600 for the quarter ended September, 2022. The total headcount at the end of the quarter stood at 259,179.

“We have also onboarded over 14,000 freshers in H1 which is about 72% of what we added in the whole of last year,” said Thierry Delaporte, CEO and Managing Director, Wipro. The company plans to hire a total of 30,000 freshers for FY23.

During the quarter we followed a strategy focusing on hiring freshers, and we will continue to follow this strategy over the next quarter, Delaporte said. Wipro also rolled out salary hikes, and promoted 10,000 employees during the quarter.

Wipro has been one of the top companies where campus hires have been facing delays in onboarding.

HCL Tech, which announced its quarterly results today, reported a net addition of 8,359 during the quarter, taking its total headcount to 219,325. Last quarter, the company added 2,089 employees.

The company added 10,339 freshers during the quarter in line with previously announced plans. During Q1, it had added 6,023 freshers. HCL Tech had previously declared plans to hire 30-35,000 freshers during the fiscal. Attrition remained stable at 23.8%.

On Monday, India’s largest IT exporter Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a net addition of 9,840 employees this quarter and said that it plans to onboard around 10,000 to 12,000 in the rest of the fiscal.

TCS said that it has onboarded 20,000 freshers this quarter and has “honored” all the offers made against a larger industry trend of delaying fresher joining due to a weak demand environment. TCS has a total target of hiring 45,000-47,000 freshers in the current fiscal year out of which it has already hired 35,000 so far this year.

Following a period of aggressive talent acquisition industry-wide in the previous fiscal, when industry leaders Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys hired 1,00,000 and 85,000 people, respectively, and Wipro and HCL Tech hired 19,000 and 23,000 engineers, this year the top four IT companies are expected to hire a total of 155,000 freshers by March 2023, marking a reduction of over 30%.
