Freshman Alexa Castañeda leads Aptos past Harbor in SCCAL soccer action

Freshman midfielder Alexa Castañeda had two goals and an assist as the Aptos High girls soccer team beat visiting Harbor 3-1 in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match Friday night.

Castañeda scored her goals in the second and seventh minutes. Ella Shoemaker assisted the first tally. The second goal was unassisted.

Harbor made it a 2-1 game in the 73rd minute, when junior midfielder Anika Dawson finished off a pass from sophomore defender Becca Vaca.

Gwen Chapman produced the final goal in the 79th minute.

Harbor (7-5-0, 1-1-0) plays at Soquel on Tuesday at 5 p.m

Girls basketball

Watsonville 68, at King City 35: Xitlali Montesino’s near quadruple-double included a school-record 32 points to go along with 14 rebounds, 11 steals and nine assists in the Wildcatz’s nonleague win Friday.

Watsonville’s previous single-game points record (31) was set by Selina Green in 2004.

Kaylani Trout-Lacy had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Wildcatz (7-8).

At Aptos 50, Harbor 21: Junior Guin Lines scored 14 points to lead the Mariners to the win in SCCAL play Friday.

Aptos controlled the game from the start with a combination of strong defense and rebounding.

Sophomore Berkeley Ashby contributed eight points, eight rebounds and three of the Mariners’ 14 steals.

Maya Manildi scored six points to lead Harbor. Abigail Higgins chipped in with five points.

The Mariners (4-10, 1-0) play at Santa Cruz on Tuesday at 6 p.m

St. Francis 30, Stevenson 26: Emily Raich had nine points, four rebounds, four steals and one block in the Sharks’ nonleague win Friday.

Issabella Fury, Allyssa Gomez and Demaria Bolden all chipped in with six points apiece for St. Francis (4-9).

The Sharks’ defense did not allow the Pirates to score in the second quarter.

Boys basketball

At Aptos 61, Harbor 42: Johnny Cornejo scored eight points and Isaiah Ackerman scored seven as the Mariners won their SCCAL game Friday.

Aptos jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and 41-23 at the half.

Miles Dix made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for Harbor and Matthew Munro made three 3s and finished with 11 points.

Soquel 76, at Scotts Valley 56: De’rel Hopkins scored 16 points, Braylon Noble scored 15, and Cade Peterson added 12 in the Knights’ SCCAL road win Friday.

Tristan Roure scored 18 points to lead Scotts Valley (7-9, 0-2).

Soquel (6-9, 1-1) hosts Harbor on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m

Kirby 51, Pacific Point Christian 45: Sophomore Rain Li had 24 points, 18 rebounds, and three assists to help the Griffins win their Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division game Friday at Enterprise Sports Club in Scotts Valley.

Senior Patrick Costello had nine points and 11 rebounds for Kirby (4-5, 1-0), and senior Darren Liu scored eight points.

Kirby plays at PCS on Tuesday at 7 pm

NBA G League

G League Ignite 136, Santa Cruz Warriors 115: Guard Dusty Hannahs scored 24 points and guard Lester Quinones added 21 points and five rebounds in the Warriors’ loss at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada, on Friday.

Center Jayce Johnson finished with a double-double, notching 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Santa Cruz (1-3).

The Warriors face the Oklahoma City Blue at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City on Sunday at 9 am

Men’s basketball

At Monterey Peninsula 65, Cabrillo 56: The Seahawks dropped their Coast Conference South Division opener Friday.

Cabrillo (8-8, 0-1) hosts Gavilan (12-5, 1-0) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Rams feature Aptos alum Cameron Saldana and Scotts Valley alum Ryan Harris.
