Former St. Norbert College hockey standout Spencer Carbery was announced Tuesday as the new coach of the NHL’s Washington Capitals.
Carbery, 41, served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs the last two seasons. HIs other stops included serving as coach and director of hockey operations for the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL from 2011 to 2016, coach of the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League in 2016-17 and as an assistant for the Providence Bruins of the AHL. in 2017-18.
“It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to be named the head coach of the Washington Capitals,” Carbery said in a statement. “I would like to thank the Capitals organization for affording me the opportunity to lead this team. I look forward to working with this group of talented players and building upon the winning culture in place. I would also like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs organization for all their support over the past two years and wish them all the best in the future.”
Carbery had a notable collegiate career during three seasons at SNC from 2003 to 2006. He finished with 55 goals and 45 assists in 87 games and scored 20 or more goals in two of his three seasons.
The Green Knights finished runner-up in NCAA Division III in both 2004 and 2006.

“We are extremely pleased to name Spencer as our new head coach,” Capitals vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan said. “Spencer is one of the best young coaches in the game who has had success at every level at which he has coached. We feel his leadership, communication skills, ability to develop players and familiarity with our organization will be a tremendous asset as he makes this next step in his coaching career.”
