Former NBA player boosts Converge bid

BOOSTED by the arrival of its first-ever import in franchise history, Converge continued to hit its stride leading up to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Quincy Miller, a former NBA player who had stops with Denver, Sacramento, and Detroit, showed up in practice last Tuesday.

New FiberXers coach Aldin Ayo is convinced the 6-foot-9 Miller has what it takes.

“I’ve seen him play, and I believe he’s going to fit very well into our system in terms of offense. At the end of the day, our goal is to win the championship,” Ayo said.

“With Quincy on board, we will continue to focus on honing the team’s competitive spirit and maximizing their capabilities as young players,” he added.

Miller, 29, said he is eager to prove his worth and steer Asia’s first play-for-pay league’s newest ballclub to great heights in the mid-season tourney set to kick off on Sept. 21.

“I’m positive I can bring both versatility and excitement to the team,” Miller said. “I make it a point to always have fun out there and I’m sure my hunger matched with the drive these young guys have will be nothing short of good.”

Added Converge team governor Atty. Chito Salud: “Converge picked Quincy for his athleticism, youth, and competitiveness. We think he will be a terrific fit for the FiberXers.

“We will have about a month to familiarize ourselves with coach Ayo’s system and his Filipino teammates before the conference begins. Quincy is looking forward to his first opportunity to play in the PBA before ardent Filipino basketball fans.”

Tabbed 38th overall by Denver in the 2012 NBA draft, the Chicago, Illinois-born Miller also saw action in Europe and Serbia.

Ayo took over from Jeffrey Cariaso at the helm of the young and athletic FiberXers that wound up as the seventh seed with a 5-6 mark in their maiden conference in the season-opening Philippine Cup.
