Former LCCC women’s soccer players took on this season’s team in a friendly game Saturday

GODFREY – The turnout was smaller than usual and the intensity perhaps a bit less than when they played for keeps, but Saturday’s Lewis and Clark Community College women’s alumni soccer game was a chance for former Trailblazers to show their stuff once more.

For the annual alumni affair on Saturday took place on the artificial turf at Glazebrook Park in Godfrey instead of at Tim Rooney Stadium at LCCC, where it had been a regular event.

“I wanted to combine it with some training for the women’s team,” said first-year LCCC women’s soccer coach Justin Bernaix. “With so many recent graduates still playing college and practicing right now, we may move it to spring.”

The LCCC men’s alumni game was canceled and is possibly being rescheduled to spring as well.

The women’s alumni game featured some Alton High grads and current players, as well as AHS girls soccer coach Gwen Sabo.

“I call it ‘Trailblazers and Friends,'” said Bernaix, who replaced Tim Rooney as head coach this season. I think the girls had fun and it’s definitely something we want to try and continue.”

The LCCC women’s soccer team will play its first preseason game Aug. 20 at McKendree University in Lebanon and will follow with a game Aug. 26 against Lake County College at home.

The regular-season opener for the LCCC women’s team is scheduled for Aug. 30 at home against John Wood College of Quincy.
