Floyd Mayweather makes two billion dollar offer to buy NBA franchise

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has revealed that he made a lucrative offer in an attempt to purchase the majority ownership of an expansion NBA franchise, doing so along with business partner Brent Johnson.

The Phoenix Suns are currently the only NBA franchise which is up for sale, as owner Robert Sarver announced this back in September after an NBA investigation found that he used racist and sexist language.

What did Floyd Mayweather say about buying an NBA team?

While Floyd Mayweather would be open to buying a current team, he is looking at the possibility of purchasing an expansion team if there is one in the near future.

“Been working on buying an NBA team outright,” Mayweather said.

“One of my other business partners Brent Johnson, he’s here, so we’ve been working on the NBA team for a while now. You know, it’s kind of rough.

“It could be the Vegas franchise, it could be the Seattle franchise, or I could be buying a franchise that’s already up and running.

“The first offer, we offered them a little bit over $2 billion for majority ownership. Do I have it? Absolutely I have it.”

What are the new expansion franchises in the NBA?

ESPN journalist Adrian Wojnarowski reported in October that the two main candidates for expansion, Vegas and Seattle, are not expected to enter the NBA soon.

Wojnarowski explained that the NBA is looking to negotiate their TV rights deal before including new teams in the league.

“The NBA plans to negotiate new television/media and Collective Bargaining deals before seriously examining the addition of new teams,” Wojnarowski wrote on Twitter.

“The possibilities of Las Vegas and Seattle as expansion candidates are real, but likely years away.”

As such, Floyd Mayweather might be left waiting for a while for his chance to enter the NBA as an owner.
