Florida State soccer players ‘not respected’ during coach search

Emily Madril of Florida State has ended her tenure with the Seminoles after three seasons.

The Florida State star announced the news via Twitter Saturday, writing, “After much thought and consideration, I have decided to forego my remaining eligibility and begin my professional career.”

In her statement, Madril also addressed the Florida State administration’s “lack of transparency and respect towards the team.”

Madril said the administration failed to consider the players’ voices during the school’s search for a new head coach.

In April, Florida State University announced Brian Bensky as the new head coach of the women’s soccer program. Bensky replaced Mark Krikorian, who abruptly stepped away from the program after 17 years with the team. In June, the Washington Spirit hired Krikorian as the NWSL club’s general manager.

“It was very unfortunate how this situation was handled, and I wish the communication from the leaders in the athletic department was more honest and direct,” Madril said of the hiring process. “We, as student athletes, have rights and would have had a valuable voice in this matter, unwavering in our commitment to the long-term success of the program.

“Our entire team is in agreement that this should have been handled differently,” Madril concluded.
