Ex-Yankees pitcher may re-sign with Red Sox, MLB insider says

Love that dirty water.

Free-agent right-hander Nathan Eovaldi could be returning to the Boston Red Sox.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports “There is still some pretty good confidence on the part of a lot of people in baseball that Nate Eovaldi may well end up back with the Boston Red Sox.”

Last week, The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Eovaldi was a potential backup plan for the New York Yankees if they missed on two-time All-Star Carlos Rodon. Of course, that became a moot point when the Yankees handed the left-hander a six-year, $162 million contract.

Eovaldi has spent the last four seasons with the Boston Red Sox. The 32-year-old right-hander was an All-Star in 2021 and finished fourth in voting that year for the American League Cy Young Award.

But Eovaldi struggled with injuries in 2022, going 6-3 with a 3.87 ERA in 20 starts.

Eovaldi made his MLB debut in 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who traded him the following year to the Marlins.

Following the 2014 season, Miami traded Eovaldi to the Yankees in the deal which also delivered right-hander Domingo Germán and utility man Garrett Jones to the Bronx in exchange for right-hander David Phelps, infielder Martín Prado and cash.

Eovaldi spent two years with the Yankees, going 23-11 with a 4.45 ERA, but his time was cut short by Tommy John surgery and New York released him after the 2016 season.

Eovaldi caught on with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018, who sent him to Boston ahead of the trade deadline that year. Eovaldi helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series and is best remembered for his gutsy six innings of relief work in Game 3, which the Red Sox lost in 18 innings.
