Former Tennessee outfielder Drew Gilbert has been invited to participate in the MLB All-Star Futures Game in Seattle on July 8.
Gilbert was drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round in the 2022 MLB Draft as the 28th pick after a stellar career with the Vols and was recently rated as the No. 1 prospect in the Astros organization.
Gilbert, an outfielder, played in 134 games over three seasons (including the COVID-19 season) and posted a .314 batting average with 22 home runs.
Gilbert currently is with the Astros’ Double-A affiliate, the Corpus Christi Hooks, after blistering his way towards promotion earlier this year.
The All-Star Futures Game (7 pm, Peacock and SiriusXM) features prospects across MLB’s affiliate teams and quite possibly the future of who will be stars on the field in coming years. It represents the best of the best in the minor leagues.
The Astros made the announcement Thursday afternoon, but some thought the post was for something else — a callup to the majors. Gilbert hit .360 with six homers and 18 RBIs at Single-A Asheville to open this season before being called to Corpus Christi, where he’s hitting .202 with two homers and 10 RBIs.
