Why has the government stepped up?
In November last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26) held in Glasgow. During this, he talked about the concept of LiFE ie Lifestyle for the Environment. This move of the Ministry has come in the same background. Apart from this, the Union Cabinet has also approved the updated National Determined Contribution (NDC) of India. According to the NDC, India has committed to reduce emissions by 45 per cent of GDP by 2030. In view of the country’s commitment to fight climate change, the ministry has taken steps to reduce electronic waste.
What will change in your life?
The biggest advantage of this will be that you will not need separate chargers for all your gadgets. This will in a way facilitate inter-operability. This means that you will be able to charge all types of smartphones, laptops and other electronic gadgets with a single charger. So far these have not been standardized. In such a situation, every company is offering its charger. But, due to this the problems of the people are increasing. They have to use different types of chargers. Once this policy is implemented, the problems of the people will be reduced.
Who can be harmed?
Experts say that companies do not want such a policy to be implemented in order to maintain their unique identity. If all phones, laptops, earbuds and so on all move towards one charger, then Apple will be hit the most. Apple’s iPhone is currently using the Lightning port for charging. It requires a separate cable from other Android phones. Similarly if you have iPhone and MacBook Air M1 then you need two different chargers. Whereas you have a new iPad and MacBook, you can charge them both with the same Type-C cable. Overall, multiple types of chargers are required.
What is happening in other countries?
The concept of one charger for all devices is not new. The European Union (EU) also proposed this in June. The argument again revolves around the problem of e-waste. Users have to buy multiple chargers. After the law is passed, it is planned to give a relaxation of 24 months to the phone makers. This will give them time to switch. In the case of laptops, manufacturers will be given 40 months to adapt their devices to the new standards.
What is the compulsion of the Government of India?
In such a situation, when other countries take steps in this direction, the Indian government fears that if it does not make the same changes, then the country will become a dumping ground for old types of equipment. He can’t stand it at all. It is in a hurry to take such a step only to weed out the e-waste.
What will be the change in mobile phones?
Currently, major smartphone players like Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, Motorola and Samsung offer USB Type-C charging slots for their smartphones. Some of these companies do not provide a charger in the box. While there are many companies that provide USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable and charger in the box for fast charging. Apple is the only top smartphone brand to have a Lightning charging slot in the iPhone. All of them now have to move towards new technology.
