‘Everyone liked him:’ Longtime Mobile County football coach Tommy Davis dies

Longtime Mobile County high school football coach Tommy Davis died over the weekend at age 75.

Davis spent time as a head coach at Mobile County High (1976-1982), Mary G. Montgomery (1983-1988) and Shaw (1993-1996).

He was a member of Terry Curtis’ first staff at Shaw.

“He was a good guy, a good coach, a good all-around person,” said Curtis, now in his 24th year as head coach at UMS-Wright. “Everyone liked him. Tommy loved to hunt and fish. He made a lot of friends.”

Curtis said he first got to know Davis when the two were playing softball once Curtis returned from Auburn.

Davis graduated from Mary G. Montgomery in 1966 and played football and baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi. He started his teaching and coaching career at Murphy as an assistant from 1971-1976.

He took his first head coaching job at Mobile County High in Grand Bay the following year. He went 30-38 there before returning to his alma mater as head coach. He was 32-31 in six years at Mary G. Montgomery, leading the Vikings to the playoffs each of the last two years.

He joined Curtis’ staff at Shaw and then took over when Curtis left to take the Murphy job in 1993. Davis led Shaw to a 32-13 record and four straight playoff berths. He later served as an assistant principal at Davidson before retiring from public schools in 1998.

He again joined Curtis’ staff at UMS in 1988 and helped the Bulldogs win a pair of state titles. In all, he was a coach and teacher for 35 years.

Visitation for coach Davis will be held from 10 am to noon on Thursday at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church with the funeral service and interment to follow at Valhalla Memorial Gardens.
