Twitter ‘Chief Twit’ Elon Musk, on Friday, tweeted a link to the account of Matt Taibbi, an independent journalist who shared ‘Twitter Files’, in what appeared to be a series of revelations through emails of Twitter employees. Among others, The Twitter Files, shared by Matt Taibbi claimed that the Hunter Biden laptop story that triggered a political storm in the US ahead of the US presidential elections 2020, was ‘suppressed’ by Twitter, which invoked norms that are followed in highly sensitive and extreme cases such as ‘child pornography’. The thread also revealed that former lead of legal Vijaya Gadde played a key role in the decision.

“What really happened with the Hunter Biden story suppression by Twitter will be published on Twitter at 5pm ET,” Musk said in a tweet. Shortly later, he shared the thread to – The Twitter Files.

Twitter before Elon Musk was ‘open to left (Democrats)’

To begin with, Twitter before Elon Musk was ‘affected with people of one political orientation’, Matt Taibbi said in a tweet named The Twitter Files. “Twitter was and is overwhelmingly staffed by people of one political orientation, there were more channels, more ways to complain, open to the left (well, Democrats) than the right,” he said in his tweet.

Taibbi goes on to say that Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, ‘removing links and posting warnings that it may be unsafe’. “They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, eg child pornography,” the thread said.

Without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, but with Vijaya Gadde playing a key role

“The decision was made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, with former head of legal, policy and trust Vijaya Gadde playing a key role,” Taibbi said in the tweet. White House spokeswoman Kaleigh McEnany was ‘locked out of her account for tweeting about the story’, he further added.

The Hunter Biden laptop story was a series of stories published by the US media on the basis of a reportedly abandoned (unclaimed) computer that belonged to Hunter Biden, the son of the then-US presidential candidate and former vice president Joe Biden. The laptop allegedly contained emails of possible corruption by Joe Biden, then a presidential candidate.
