Eastwood grad Javier Delgadillo earns spot in 2023 US Amateur golf tourney

Eastwood graduate and New Mexico State men’s golfer, Javier Delgadillo, qualified for the USGA Amateur Championship on Tuesday by winning a US Amateur Qualifier in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.

Delgadillo, a 2022 Eastwood graduate, shot two 5-under-par, 67’s in the two-day tournament to hold off Anthony Lara of Anthony, New Mexico, by one shot.

“Qualifying for the US Amateur has always been on my bucket list and I’ve tried a couple of other times, but this time I was able to put together a good two days of golf,” Delgadillo said. “I birdied four of the last five holes and was able to finish strong. It was a good field of golfers and I can’t wait for the opportunity to compete against the very best.”

The USGA Amateur Championship will be held August 14-20 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. Delgadillo also earned a spot in the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, July 25-28, at the Capilano Golf & Country Club in Canada.

“I’ll get a great test at the Pacific Coast Amateur and that will help me continue to grow,” Delgadillo said.

As a true freshman for the Aggies, Delgadillo stole the show several times throughout his first year with New Mexico State. Delgadillo carded three top-ten finishes and a top-five finish at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate. He fired a career-low 67 in the second round of the Aggie Invitational on the way to a sixth-place tie. Delgadillo capped off his stellar freshman campaign with another tie for sixth place at the WAC Men’s Golf Championships, missing his career-best tournament score by one shot and was named the WAC Freshman of the Year.

“My freshman year at NMSU prepared me for big tournaments,” Delgadillo said. “As my freshman year went on, I found more success and became more comfortable.”
