Ducks rally past Maple Leafs in OT to end seven-game slide

ANAHEIM — Trevor Zegras scored his second goal of the game at 2:15 of overtime, and the Anaheim Ducks ended a seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Honda Center on Sunday.

Zegras scored on a 2-on-1 rush 10 seconds later John Gibson made back-to-back sprawling saves on the Maple Leafs forward Mitchell Marner.

“I was kind of beat,” Gibson said. “I thought [Marner] was going to go backdoor, so I decided to do whatever I could to keep it out, and luckily enough I did.”

Jakob Silfverberg and Dmitry Kulikov also scored, and Gibson made 32 saves for the Ducks (2-6-1), who fell behind 3-1 in the opening minute of the third period.

Anaheim was 0-6-1 during the losing streak.

“We rallied pretty well and showed that we can get off this little skid that we’re on,” Zegras said. “It was nice to get the W.”

Austin Matthews, Denis Malgin and Calle Jarnkrok scored, and Erik Kallgren made 35 saves for the Maple Leafs (4-4-2), who have lost four in a row (0-2-2).

“We started off a lot worse last year (2-4-1) and everyone tried to put shambles in our brain,” Marner said. “It’s not going to happen with us. We’re getting to go back home now. It’s time to regroup.”

Zegras scored on a breakaway to cut it to 3-2 at 7:24 of the third, and Kulikov tucked in a wraparound to tie it 3-3 at 13:01.

Frank Vatrano then appeared to give Anaheim a 4-3 lead with 4:54 remaining, but Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe challenged the play for goalie interference, and the call was reversed after a video review.

“We needed that, to come back on a good team like that and show resiliency,” Gibson said. “Fighting back through the goalie interference and overturning that goal, finding a way to get two points in overtime, speaks a lot.”

Toronto was playing its third road game in four days after losing 4-3 in overtime to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday and 4-2 to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

“We’ve got to get home and get rested,” Keefe said. “Going to get some healthy bodies in our lineup here soon, too, so those kinds of things will give us a boost.”

Matthews gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 4:23 of the first period. Nicholas Robertson brought the puck into the offensive zone and passed to William Nylanderwho found Matthews skating through the middle for his third goal of the season.

Silfverberg tied it 1-1 at 11:23, scoring on a one-timer off a backhand pass along the goal line. Derek Grant.

“It’s been a real struggle to get out of our end,” Keefe said.

Malgin put the Maple Leafs back in front 2-1 at 17:50. Anaheim left the middle of the ice open again, and Nylander sprung Malgin for a breakaway with a centering pass.

Kallgren made a save on Grant’s breakaway attempt with six seconds left in the second. Grant drew a slashing penalty on the play, giving the Ducks a power play to begin the third, but Jarnkrok scored a short-handed goal 45 seconds into the period off a 2-on-1. Alexander Kerfoot to push it to 3-1.

Kerfoot then missed a chance to extend the lead when he failed to convert a penalty shot at 6:27.

“I had to come up with a save to keep the game close,” Gibson said. “If they score that, it’s a three-goal lead. It would be tough to come back, so I’m just trying to do my part and keep the game close.”

NOTES: Nylander traded spots with Jarnkrok in the lineup. Nylander was the center of the third line with Robertson and Malgin, and Jarnkrok played right wing on the second line with Kerfoot and John Tavares. … The Ducks played without a defenseman Jamie Drysdale, who sustained an upper-body injury in a 4-0 loss at the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday. … The Ducks dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen for the second consecutive game.
