Detroit Tigers 2B Jonathan Schoop leaves game vs. Angels with right ankle sprain

Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop exited Saturday’s 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Angels in the bottom of the second inning with a right ankle sprain.

He is day-to-day.

Schoop, 30, hurt his ankle while running the bases after cranking an RBI double to drive in the Tigers’ first run. On Tucker Barnhart’s ensuing single to right fielder Taylor Ward, third base coach Ramon Santiago tried to score Schoop from second base.

Schoop wasn’t close to being safe.

“I haven’t asked him,” manager AJ Hinch said of Santiago’s decision. “I’m sure he was pretty aggressive. We haven’t scored a ton, so I think he was trying to be ultra-aggressive. At that time of the game, it was raining and wet.”

Angels catcher Max Stassi received the ball, and since Schoop was so far away from scoring, he tried to dodge the tag and lunge for the plate. He was called out for leaving the baseline. Before standing up, Schoop put his hands on his right ankle.

“It’s just a guess for me,” Hinch said. “I haven’t talked to him about it, but it was obviously aggressive. He made a great throw with a wet ball. We’ll talk about it.”

He had a noticeable limp on his way back to the dugout and went to the clubhouse with athletic trainer Doug Teter. Rookie utility player Kody Clemens replaced him at second base in the top of the third.

Schoop is batting .202 with nine home runs, 15 walks and 99 strikeouts in 115 games this season. He has not been placed on the injured list since September 2020; that was for a right wrist sprain that ended his year.
