The Dallas Mavericks need some more depth as they deal with injuries sustained by Christian Wood and Maxi Kleber. JaVale McGee is unreliable, often requiring them to go small with Dorian Finney-Smith as a micro-ball five.
According to HoopsHype, the Mavs are signing Chris Silva to a 10-day contract. He has primarily played for the College Park Skyhawks in the NBA G League this season — the affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks.
The 6-foot-9 forward played four seasons of collegiate basketball at South Carolina and was named 2017-18 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and earned two SEC All-Defense nods. He averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in 21.7 minutes per game in 134 career games.
Silva, 26, has been unable to stick in the NBA since going undrafted in 2019. He did earn a standard NBA contract with the Heat in January 2020, but was traded to the Sacramento Kings in part of a deal that featured Nemanja Bjelica. Silva was then waived by the Kings.
Silva has spent much of his career in the G League, waiting to sign 10-day contracts since that trade. He signed four 10-day contracts with the Heat in 2021-22, but it never transpired into a stable role with the team on a standard NBA contract.
Silva is coming off a performance with the Skyforce that featured 22 points and seven rebounds. He did a lot of his work from inside the paint. The defensive versatility and offensive rebounding he provides are his greatest attributes, but he lacks tangible strengths offensively.
