Rasmus Dahlin is off to a historic start this season and the Buffalo Sabers defenseman is the featured guest on this week’s episode of the “NHL @TheRink” podcast.
Co-hosts Dan Rosen and Shawn P. Roarke spoke to Dahlin at the NHL Player Media Tour in Las Vegas on Sept. 15 and much of what he said then is relevant now to his and the Sabres’ start to the season.
Dahlin has scored a goal in five straight games to open the season, an NHL record for a defenseman, to help the Sabers go 4-1-0 entering their game against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday (10 p.m. ET; ROOT -NW, MSG-B, ESPN+, SN NOW).
He spoke on the podcast about his love for the game.
“I’m kind of obsessed with the sport and I just try to find ways to get better every day,” Dahlin said. “It’s such a cliché, but it’s actually true. It’s always for me, except when I’m on the golf course actually. That’s one of my times to get away from the sport and do something else. But other than that it’s always coming back to hockey, what you eat in a day, what you do, what you do to prepare and all that.”
Dahlin also talked about his expectations for the Sabers this season.
“High,” he said.
As in making the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2011.
“You always go into the season and you want to win for sure, but this year feels extra,” Dahlin said. “Everyone in the organization feels the same way.”
Other topics covered by Rosen and Roarke in this episode include Phil Kessel‘s ironman streak, with the Vegas Golden Knights forward set to play in his 990th consecutive game Tuesday, breaking Keith Yandle’s record; the Vancouver Canucks’ struggles; the co-hosts stating their case on why Artemi Panarin will (Rosen) or won’t (Roarke) get 100 points with the New York Rangers this season; and the surprisingly strong start for the Chicago Blackhawks.
