Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Stone Garrett has spent eight seasons at various levels of the minor leagues, so you just know he had imagined The Phone Call in his head many times over the years. A chance to tell his parents he was going to the big leagues.
On Wednesday, Garrett finally placed that call home, and he played it off perfectly.
Amid a monster season with Triple-A Reno (Garrett is hitting .275 with 28 home runs), Garrett learned he’d be joining the Diamondbacks in San Francisco to make his MLB debut that same night against the Giants. When it was time to tell his parents the news, Garrett played it off like a typical call home, asking his mom and dad to find an insurance card.
Then… he broke the news to his parents.
So good.
I love how he prefaced the awesome news with “I’m lying.” He had to keep the suspense going. After eight years in the minors, he absolutely needed to have fun with that phone call. Great on the Aces for sharing the video too — these moments never get old.
MLB fans also loved seeing Garrett break the call-up news to his parents.
This was how Twitter reacted
The Diamondbacks have him starting in left field and batting fifth on Wednesday.
