Crews battle fires at gym, mobile home park in Mountain View

MOUNTAIN VIEW – Crews battled separate fires at a gym and near a mobile home Tuesday night in Mountain View.

The first fire was reported just after 5:30 pm at City Sports Club at 1040 Grant Road. Crews arrived to find a laundry room filled with smoke and removed some smoldering rags from a dryer, the Mountain View Fire Department said in a news release.

After soaking the rags in water, crews vented smoke from the building, according to the fire department. Visitors were evacuated from the building during that time.

The fire department identified a dryer malfunction as the cause of the fire and estimated the damage at about $17,000.

Around 5:50 pm, a second fire was reported at a mobile home park in the 100 block of East El Camino Real. The fire department said crews arrived to find a 15-foot-long section of an 8-foot-tall fence on fire, and the flames were threatening a home.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which was caused by hot ashes that were dumped too close to the fence, according to the fire department. The damage to the fence was estimated at about $3,000.
