Compete welcomes the government’s move to hear regional mobile infrastructure

The Federal Government is mulling to usher co-investment for regional mobile carriers and will hear a meeting regarding the matter—a move welcomed by telco alliance body Compete.

The House Communications and the Arts will take a closer look into the experience, opportunities, and challenges for co-investment in multi-carrier regional mobile infrastructure following the request made by Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland last September, iTWire reported.

“Co-investment is a tool which would allow multiple telecommunications providers in regional areas to invest in and share ‘multi-carrier’ mobile towers and related infrastructure, to improve services,” said Committee Chair Brian Mitchell.

Mitchell claims the majority of mobile infrastructure in Australia is not co-located, especially in regional areas.

Rates of co-location for major mobile providers decline when moving from urban to regional and remote areas—as low as 4.8%.

Mitchell stressed that it was important for rural communities to hear their side and their experiences connecting to telecommunications infrastructure.

Compete has vouched support for the parliamentary inquiry.

“Where new alternative service model regimes are brought to the forefront, there is an opportunity to ensure objectives of competition and consider open access regimes. This will enable connectivity, as well as help deliver a breath of innovative digital product service offerings,” said Compete chair Michelle Lim.

“We also believe that distributing the benefits of digital technology regardless of where you work, play, travel or live is a national public interest. If the models where government can be involved are designed and set up to best serve public interests from the start, this will provide a good baseline to distribute greater opportunities for the future. People in rural, regional and remote communities rely on this utility perhaps more than anyone else to remain connected and seek assistance in the case of an emergency,” Lim added.

“Compete believes in paving ways to allow a diversity of smaller and larger mobile providers in any market structure.”
