Colorado Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle was carted off the field during Thursday’s game against the Miami Marlins at Coors Field after he hit the outfield wall trying to grab a fly ball.
In the top of the ninth inning with one out and Miami’s Xavier Edwards on first base, Colorado’s Pierce Johnson threw a pitch to Jorge Soler. The designated hitter blasted the ball towards center field where Doyle ran and then leaped into the wall in an attempt to get the out. The ball bounced out of his glove and into the stands for a two-run home run.
Doyle hit his right knee against the padded wall while in the air, landed jarringly on his right foot and then hit his knee again when he fell in the dirt. He grabbed his right knee and grimaced as he lay on the ground, writhing in pain.
His teammates and manager Bud Black stood by as trainers assessed his injury. A cart was brought on the field and the trainers helped him hobble over to it, where he sat down. The crowd cheered and he gave a wave as he was driven away.
After blowing a four-run lead, the Rockies won the game, 7-6, with a walk-off single from Ezequiel Tovar.
“It’s gonna take a few days to feel better… I’m happy we ended up winning the ballgame,” Doyle said after the game, per reporter Patrick Lyonswho reported that Doyle suffered a knee contusion.
The Denver Post’s Kyle Newman added that Black said Doyle is not expected to go on the injured list.
