(August 14, 2022 8:10 PM) Western High School graduate Brett Casto has been close to winning a Jackson County major golf tournament.
On Sunday he finally closed the door, winning the Jackson Masters at Calderone Golf Club.
Casto finished with an even-par total of 144 playing from the black tees – the tips – at Calderone.
Mike Brockie finished second at 145, Greg Zeller finished third with 147, Cannon Risner shot 148, and Zach DeFrain and Jacob Malcangi finished tied for fifth at 149.
Casto had tied for first at the Spring Thaw at Cascades Golf Course, but lost in a playoff to Brogan Brockie.
“Today I stayed more focused on staying out of trouble,” Casto said. “I like to play fast so I don’t overthink and start hitting wayward shots.”
The 2020 Western graduate and Spring Arbor University junior used a hot putter to earn the win.
“Yesterday I had 11 putts on the first nine,” Casto said. “I was four under after nine.”
He finished with rounds of 70, 74 to shoot even par.
Mike Brockie was two strokes behind Casto to start the day and shot a 73. Zeller shot the best round of the day with an even-par 72.
The tournament paid out for the top 10 placers plus two closest to the pins on both Saturday and Sunday.
