Carlow & District League are on the lookout for new additions to their women’s league

The Carlow & District League will kick off this week in the form of the KCLR Shield.

The games begin on Friday the 26th, and while excitement is rising the secretary of the Carlow League Bryan O’Reilly was quick to make a call for more teams to enter their ladies league.

The Coffee Lady Women’s League and Scoreline.ie Women’s Shield had five teams registered last year with Newpark, Mill Celtic, Deen Celtic, Crettyard and Vale Wanderers all fielding sides. As you can see the league currently includes teams from Kilkenny and Carlow, with some teams fielding former WNL players, so the competition is good. Speaking to Scoreline Bryan says despite the competitive nature of each team, they simply need more;

“We are looking for ladies’ teams. We would appeal now to any girls out there who are looking to play soccer just to contact their local club.”

“We only had about four or five teams in the league last year, and we are struggling this year. After the euros, ladies’ soccer is on such a high at the moment.”

“We have a big meeting coming up to decide what we are going to do. One side of our league that we are trying to develop more and promote a little bit more.”
