Cape Breton soccer teams to play in provincial championship tournaments this weekend

SYDNEY, NS — Cape Breton soccer teams will be on the pitch this weekend in hopes of capping their 2022 seasons with provincial titles.

Six teams from the island will compete in Soccer Nova Scotia provincial championship tournaments including Cape Breton FC’s under-18 ‘AA’ girls’ team, which will host the tournament in Sydney.

Cape Breton will open the tournament with a semifinal game against Suburban FC on Saturday at 1 pm at the Ness Timmons Soccer Field on the Cape Breton University campus.

The bronze medal and championship contests are slated for Sunday at 12 pm and 2 pm respectively at Ness Timmons Soccer Field.

FC finished the 14-game Nova Scotia Soccer League in first place with an 11-1-2 record.

Meanwhile, Whitney Pier Minor Soccer Association will be represented in the under-18 girls ‘B’ division tournament in New Minas.

Whitney Pier will play Valley No. 1 at 9 am and Fundy at 3 pm on Saturday. The club will finish the round robin on Sunday at 9 am against Valley No. 2.

The bronze medal and championship games are slated for 1 pm starts. All games at Lockhart Ryan Field.

In the under-15 ‘AA’ girls’ division, Cape Breton FC will be in Halifax for their provincial tournament and will open the event with a semifinal match on Saturday at 2 pm against Halifax City.

The bronze medal and championship games will both be played at 12:30 pm on Sunday. All games are at Mainland Common Field.

FC finished in third place in the nine-team provincial league with an 8-5-3 record.

Turning to the boys’ divisions, the New Waterford Wolves will be in New Minas for the ‘B’ category provincial tournament.

New Waterford will be on the field on Saturday at 11 am, however, their opponent was not determined at publication time. The club also plays at 5 pm against Fundy, before wrapping up the round robin on Sunday at 11 am against Valley No. 2.

The bronze medal and championship games are scheduled for 3 pm on Sunday. All games at Lockhart Ryan Field.

In the under-18 boys’ ‘AA’ division, Cape Breton FC will be in Halifax for their provincial event.

Cape Breton opens the tournament with a semifinal showdown with United DFC at 6 pm on Saturday at Mainland Common Field.

The bronze medal and championship games will be played on Sunday at 11 am and 1 pm respectively at Bedford/Hammonds Plains All Weather Field.

FC finished in second place in the seven-team provincial league with an 8-5-1 record.

Finally, the under-15 ‘AA’ boys will also be in the Halifax Regional Municipality for their provincial tournament.

Cape Breton will play South Shore in the semifinal match on Saturday at 4 pm
