Canadiens call up 2022 second-round draft pick Owen Beck on emergency recall from OHL

The Montreal Canadiens have recalled their 2022 second-round draft pick Owen Beck on emergency recall from the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League, the team announced Friday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Beck will join the Canadiens in Ottawa for their Saturday night game against the Senators, making his NHL debut.
  • The Canadiens selected Beck at No. 33 in the 2022 NHL Draft.
  • Beck has 19 goals and 25 assists in 37 OHL games played with the Petes and Mississauga Steelheads.

Backstory

The Canadiens are dealing with several injured players. Defenseman Kaiden Guhle will miss a minimum of eight weeks with a lower-body injury. Forwards Brendan Gallagher (lower body), Jake Evans (lower body), Joel Armia (upper body) and No. 1 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft Juraj Slafkovský (lower body) are all on the injured reserve. Center Sean Monahan hasn’t played since Dec. 5, 2022 and is on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Right winger Cole Caufield is missing the remainder of the season with a right shoulder injury, the team announced on Jan. 21.

The Canadiens sit eighth in the Atlantic Division with a 20-25-4 record.

How rare is recalling a junior player

Emergency recalls of signed junior players are a very rare occurrence in the NHL as they are a limited-time recourse that a club can use only when they have significant injury issues on their roster. Montreal has those issues currently. — Pronman

Evaluating Beck as a prospect

Beck is a good prospect, as he is projected in the middle of the lineup as a player when he gets older. His strong skating and competitive level should allow him to survive for a couple of NHL games even as a very young player. — Pronman
