Cameron Smith into final, prize money, Punch GC

Australia’s LIV Golf stars are a step closer to splitting the single biggest cash prize in the sport after pulling off another upset on day two of the Team Championship.

Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones and Wade Ormsby — known as Punch GC — have qualified for Sunday’s final, when one of four teams will split $16 million (AUD$25m).

Having just made the final showdown at Trump National in Florida, the four Aussies are guaranteed at least $1 million (AUD$1.56m) each.

In total, $34 million (A$53m) will be handed out to the 16 players in the final, while the entire event is worth $50 million (AUD$78m).

Punch GC reached the final after beating Fireballs GC — Sergio Garcia, Carlos Ortiz, Abraham Ancer and Eugenio Chacarra — 2-1.

Jones and Ormsby won a nailbiting contest against Chacarra and Ancer 1 UP, before Leishman sealed the match for Punch GC by beating Ortiz by the same margin.

That took the pressure off Smith who, in round one, drained a clutch 10-foot putt on the 18th to beat Phil Mickelson and win the match against the Hyflyers at the death.

Smith was two-up early in the round but he failed to gain a point in the final nine holes as Garcia ran away with the match 2 & 1.

Nevertheless, Punch GC now joins Aces GC, Stinger GC and Smash GC in the final.

Punch GC was seeded as the 11th team out of 12 heading into the season finale.

The final round sees all 16 players across the four teams compete in stroke play.

Every shot will count towards the team total, with the team with the lowest cumulative score being crowned champion.

Dustin Johnson’s Aces GC is the favorite to take out the title having won four of seven events in the regular season.
