Cabrillo men’s soccer posts shutout, moves into second round of regional playoffs

Gavin Keith and Eric Vazquez scored 12 minutes apart in the first half, and the Cabrillo College men’s soccer team beat Modesto 3-0 in the first round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs on Wednesday.

Keith scored on a pass from Adrian Madueno Nieblas in the 22nd minute of the match, played at Cal State University Monterey Bay, and Vazquez made it 2-0 when he converted a pass from Oscar Herrera in the 34th.

Mark Gonzalez scored the Seahawks’ final goal in the 75th minute, and Pedro Hernandez was credited with the assist.

Goalie Sean Cameron made four saves for the Seahawks (10-4-6), the fifth-place finisher in the Coast Conference’s North Division during the regular season.

Cabrillo plays at No. 8 Butte (15-2-4) in the second round of action Saturday at noon. The Roadrunners, who have 20 out-of-country players on their roster, had a first-round bye after earning a share of the Golden Valley Conference with Feather River.

Rabinovich was named Academic All-District: UC Santa Cruz senior midfielder Itay Rabinovich was named Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA). He advances to the national ballot with Academic All-Americans to be announced in early December.

The Cupertino native started 44 games in his UCSC career, including 16 this season.

The Business Management Econ major is the first Banana Slug to be chosen Academic All-District since James Allison in 2019.

Men’s golf

California Senior Amateur Championship: Randy Haag of Orinda successfully defended his title at the 31st California Senior Amateur Championship at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Wednesday. He closed with 73 for a 3-over 213 total.

Scott Almquist of Trabuco Canyon and Tim Hogarth of Simi Valley tied for second place at 214.

Mark Morgan of Shingle Springs, Casey Boyns of Monterey, and Jeff Wilson of Fairfield each shot 218 and tied for fourth.

Santa Cruz’s Peter Wood and Rich Gleghorn, Dave Soika of Capitola, and Aptos’ Gomer Piercy were among players who missed the cut following Tuesday’s second round.

Women’s volleyball

San Mateo 3, at Cabrillo 1: Sophomore outside hitter Jazmyn Tubbs had 17 kills and nine digs, but the Seahawks lost their Coast Conference North Division finale, 21-25, 29-27, 25-14, 25-22, on Tuesday.

Sophomore setter Carly Ditz had 13 kills, nine assists and six digs for the Seahawks. Sophomore Lindsay Heller had seven kills, 18 assists, and 23 digs, and sophomore Emma Martin had two kills, 18 assists, and 10 digs. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Olivia Schroeder had a team-high 24 digs.

The No. 3 state ranked Bulldogs (20-3, 10-0) won the conference title and No. 16 Cabrillo (12-10, 7-3) finished tied for second place with No. 18 Hartnell (20-10, 7-3).
