The meaning of Fenway Park to New England sports fans, the impact of the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic that will be played at the old ballpark in Boston, and reasons why the Boston Bruins have been the toast of the NHL this season were just some of the topics discussed and debated on the latest episode of the “NHL @TheRink” podcast.
Amalie Benjamin, NHL.com’s Boston-based staff writer, joined co-hosts Dan Rosen and Shawn P. Roarke to talk all things Winter Classic, which the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins will play at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, on Monday (2 p.m. ET; TNT, SN, TVAS).
Benjamin discussed her Boston roots, growing up a Red Sox fan, living her dream of being able to one day work at Fenway Park when she covered baseball for the Boston Globe, and now what it means to cover a hockey game that will be played in the shadow of the Green Monster.
She also talked about the Bruins (27-4-3), the season they’re having, why they’ve been the best team in the NHL, unbeaten in regulation on home ice (18-0-2), and what could be in store for them in advance of the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline on March 3.
Rosen and Roarke also debated which Vegas Golden Knights team was closer to reality, the one that started the season 13-2-0 or the one that is 11-10-1 since then. They also had a similar discussion about the Washington Capitals, who are 10-1-0 since Dec. 5 after starting the season 10-12-4.
There were also discussions on the St. Louis Blues potentially being a seller at the trade deadline and the impact of Alex Ovechkin leaping Gordie Howe on the all-time NHL goal scoring list to be second behind Wayne Gretzky, currently tying The Great One’s record from 92 goals.
