Brooklyn Nets hire Jay Hernandez as assistant coach

The Brooklyn Nets have hired Jay Hernandez as assistant coach to Jacque Vaughn’s coaching staff on Monday, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Hernandez has been in the NBA for the past nine seasons as an assistant coach and having a hand in player development in parts of those nine seasons.

Hernandez has been a part of the Charlotte Hornet’s coaching staff since the 2018-19 season and was on the staff during both the tenures of Steve Clifford and James Borrego. Before landing in Charlotte, Hernandez was part of the coaching staff for the Orlando Magic from 2014 to 2018. He crossed paths with Vaughn during the 2014-2015 season when Vaughn was entering his third season as the head coach.

Hernandez is a native of Long Island, New York and played at Hofstra University before playing professionally in Puerto Rico for three seasons, according to his bio on the NBCA website. Brooklyn is still filling out its coaching staff after recently letting go of Igor Kokoskov, Tiago Splitter, and Brian Keefe.
