Brice Matthews led the way for Nebraska during Sunday’s MLB Draft in Seattle.
Matthews became the seventh player in program history to go in the first round when he was selected by the Houston Astros in at No. 28 overall. Matthews is also the first player since Joba Chamberlain in 2006 to go in the opening round.

Matthews had one of the best individual seasons in program history during his junior year this past spring.
The Huskers’ shortstop became the first player in school history to hit 20 home runs and record 20 stolen bases, and he became just the seventh player to achieve those marks since at least 2011. He’s in a tie for eighth in single-season home runs (20). He hit .359 in 54 games with 67 RBI, 74 hits and 61 runs while having a .723 slugging percentage, 1.204 OPS and .481 OB%.
For his efforts Matthews was named to multiple All-American teams including Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA and Perfect Game as well as being named to the All-Region team by the ABCA/Rawlings.
Sunday’s draft continues on Monday with rounds three through 10 where the Huskers’ Max Anderson and Emmett Olson are expected to be selected. Jace Kaminska is also in contention to be selected as he could hear his name on Tuesday with rounds 11-20.
