Brewers vs. Dodgers preview and picks

The Brewers looked as if they might take off from their post-trade deadline slumber when they split the recent four-game series with the Dodgers. But they went to Chicago over the weekend and won just once in three games against the Cubs and are 7-10 since Aug. 3.

The Dodgers will get their second crack at the Brewers in a week and have their eyes wide open now after they could do no better than a four-game series split at Milwaukee. The Dodgers scored just 13 runs in the entire series.

Back home, the Dodgers look to be in a better flow offensively, scoring 17 runs in the past two games against the Marlins. That included six runs and 10 hits against Sandy Alcantara on Sunday, the most the right-hander has allowed in a game this season.

The Dodgers already got a look at Brewers starter Eric Lauer on Wednesday but scored just twice in seven innings against him. LA has never fared well against Lauer historically, but consecutive starts against a top MLB offense is a tough ask.

Our pick: Dodgers -1.5 runs, (-120)

Dodgers starter Julio Urias is on top of his game at the moment, rising to the top of the team’s rotation with Walker Buehler out for the season and Clayton Kershaw on the IL. A 20-game winner a season ago, Urias appears to be even better this season.

Urias is 10-0 with a 1.99 ERA over his last 11 starts and has given up just three home runs in his last 63 1/3 innings. In five innings against the Brewers last week at Milwaukee, Urias did not allow a run, although he wasn’t exactly efficient with 94 pitches.

Lauer has always stood tall against the Dodgers. Not only did he limit them to two runs last week, he has a career 2.56 ERA against Los Angeles in 10 starts. Lauer also knows Dodger Stadium well from his days with the Padres, going 2-0 with a 3.68 ERA in four starts.

Our pick: Game under 8 runs, (-115)

The Dodgers have been relentless on offense this season with a major league-best plus-264 run differential. And most of that production has come from the top of the order that has the two hit leaders in baseball: Freddie Freeman (151) and Trea Turner (149).

But while Mookie Betts, Turner, and Freeman get the most attention for the Dodgers’ run-scoring prowess, cleanup hitter Will Smith has 73 RBIs, getting three more Sunday on three separate RBI hits against the Marlins.

And if the top of the order is stymied early, guys like Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, Joey Gallo, Gavin Lux, and Trayce Thompson near the bottom of the order have been getting the job done of late. With Urias rolling and the offense relentless again, expect LA to score early.

Our pick: Dodgers to score first, (-135)
