Brett McKinnon falls back at Canadian mid-amateur golf championship; sits seven strokes off the lead

Brett McKinnon took a step back during Wednesday’s second round of the Canadian men’s mid-amateur championship.

The Ashburn golfer originally from Glace Bay carded a 3-over 73 at The Thornhill Club in Thornhill, Ont. McKinnon, the reigning Nova Scotia amateur and mid-am champion, had three birdies and six bogeys during his round. He’s at 2-over 142 for the tournament.

The 28-year-old is tied for eighth, seven strokes back of defending champion Charles Fitzsimmons of London, Ont. Fitzsimmons fired a 3-under 67 on Wednesday. His round included a pair of birdies on the front nine and an eagle on the par-5 15th.

McKinnon started the day just a stroke back of Fitzsimmons after an opening-round 69.

Ten other Nova Scotians are in the field at the four-round national championship for amateur golfers over the age of 25. Five made the 36-hole cut.

Dundee’s Leon Carter shot a second-round 71 (144), Ashburn’s Jamie Sweet fired an even-par 70 (146), Grandview’s Craig Hollett carded a 75 (148), Jeff Hovell of Ashburn had a 71 (149) and Oakfield’s Trevor Chow tallied a 74 (150).

Lincoln Bradley of Seaview (77-151), Oakfield’s Glenn Robinson, the defending Canadian mid-master (over 40) champion (79-154), Lingan’s Corson Roach (79-157), Kenny Mountain of Granite Springs (76-158) and Chad Anderson of The Links at Brunello (86-168) each failed to make the cut.
