It was announced last week that Talyn Boyko, a net minder who was born and raised in the Drumheller Valley, has signed an entry level contract with the New York Rangers.
Boyko was drafted by the Rangers back in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and played with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League for the 2021-2022 season. He shared that he was very excited to be able to sign the contract. “It’s obviously been a big dream of mine to sign an NHL contract. Right from when I was selected by New York, it was obviously one of my biggest goals. When I first started playing hockey, it was always one of my goals to sign an NHL contract and to sign it with a very storied team like the Rangers, an original six organization, it was very special.”
Boyko attended the entry level and main camp with the New York Rangers this fall and has had a busy time since then. “Basically I went to New York to attend rookie camp then ultimately went to main camp immediately following that. I was there for a couple weeks and New York offered me a contract. I then was down with their American Hockey League team. in Hartford, CT in the AHL and then was with their other affiliate in Jacksonville, FL., when we ultimately came to terms on the contract. Between 3 leagues, it was quite quite the experience as far as training camp went.”
Boyko has now been sent back to the Kelowna Rockets to finish his final year of his junior career. Although he would love to be playing in the professional ranks, he is happy to be back. It’s been good, obviously. We have an awesome group here and I’m great friends with lots of the guys on the team so it was really nice to see them. Obviously it’s different at each level. There’s new challenges and new things need to adjust to, so just kind of working out those things and getting back to it.”
Boyko is back on the ice on Friday and Saturday nights in Portland where his team will face the Portland Winterhawks..
