Blues Head Coach Craig Berube may be focused on getting his own team ready for the start of a new season, but he can’t help but notice what’s been going on with the team just a few blocks down Clark Street.
Berube has been following St. Louis Cardinals legend Albert Pujols as he climbs higher in baseball’s record books, and he’s hoping that maybe this season won’t be the end of all that.
“Hopefully he’ll convince himself to play another year,” Berube said Wednesday. “He’s got more records he can break next year. He’s a hell of a player. One of the best of all time.”
Pujols previously announced plans to retire at the end of the season, and confirmed those plans again with USA Today in August. After returning to the Cardinals, he became the fourth member of MLB’s 700-home run club, joining Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth as the only players to accomplish the feat.
This season, Pujols has posted his highest home run total (24) since 2016. He also has now recorded 2,218 career RBIs, which eclipsed Ruth for second in MLB history and trails only Aaron.

To commemorate his legendary career, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones proclaimed Oct. 5, 2022 as Albert Pujols Day in the City of St. Louis.
The Cardinals will begin their Wild Card series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday at Busch Stadium.
