Bengals New Year’s Eve games have historically brought excitement

The Cincinnati Bengals announced Wednesday that their Week 17 game will be in Kansas City when they play the Chiefs on New Year’s Eve.

This is only the third time in franchise history the Bengals will have a game on that day. All three so far have been very memorable for Bengals fans.

The first was in 1988, when they beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-13 in the divisional round of the playoffs, a team that would go on to lose in the Super Bowl to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bengals played the Steelers on New Year’s Eve in 2006, a game that would clinch a playoff berth if they won. Carson Palmer led Cincinnati to overtime, but never got the chance to win it since Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes connected for a 67-yard touchdown to win it on the third play after regulation.

The most recent New Year’s Eve game was in 2017, a 31-27 win over the Baltimore Ravens. In the final minute, the Bengals down by three with their backs against the wall on fourth-and-12 at midfield, Andy Dalton hit Tyler Boyd for a 49-yard touchdown pass to eliminate the Ravens from playoff contention.

New Year’s Eve has only brought excitement for the Bengals so far, and a game against their biggest rival in the AFC currently could only add to that.
