SHAWN WINDSOR: Tigers’ win after a pair of injury losses a true indication of team’s character
SATURDAY’S LOSS Tigers too wild in 2-1 loss to White Sox
Game notes: Will the Tigers ever get a hit with a runner in scoring position again? Of course, we know they will, but it has been a grim couple of days on the South Side of Chicago, with Tigers hitters going 0-for-9 in RISP situations in Friday night’s shutout and 0-for-6 in Saturday’s loss — their one run scored on a wild pitch.
They may get some help from Chicago’s starter today; Michael Kopech has been victimized this season by too many juicy pitches around the strike zone. The 27-year-old has allowed 25 “barrels” — defined by MLB as “a batted ball with the perfect combination of exit velocity and launch angle” for hitters — in 155 batted balls; that 16.1% percentage rate is fourth-worst in MLB. Add in his always-stellar velocity — he’s averaging 95.8 mph on his heater this season — and it’s a recipe for the long ball; Kopech has allowed 14 homers (fourth-most in the AL) in just 61⅔ innings.
Matthew Boyd, meanwhile, will be making his 12th career start against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field; blame Chicago’s typically power-packed lineups, or the general vibe on the South Side, but it hasn’t exactly been a run to remember for the lefty. Boyd sports a career 6.43 ERA over 49 innings, with 62 strikeouts, 15 walks and, ahem, 11 home runs. That homer total is tied for the most of any visitor to Guaranteed Rate Field with fewer than 50 innings pitched (along with Rick Helling’s 11 in just 32 innings — ouch).
After the Tigers depart Guaranteed Rate, US Cellular or, shoot, Comiskey Park II — whatever you want to call it — they’ll head to Philadelphia for a three-game set against the Phillies beginning Monday: Hello again, Gregory Soto! The White Sox, however, have Monday off to travel to New York for a three-game set against the Yankees beginning Tuesday.
