Colchester’s Henry Bacon has been named the Vermont high school boys soccer player of the year for the 2022 season, Gatorade announced Friday morning.
The senior is the fourth player in program history to earn the Gatorade distinction, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character.
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound midfielder tallied 11 goals and seven assists during the 2022 season, leading the Lakers (12-3-2) to their first Division I championship-game appearance in nine years. Bacon was also the Burlington Free Press player of the year for the 2022 campaign and a two-time Vermont Coaches Association All-State selection in DI.

A member of the Colchester High School Athletic Leadership Council, Bacon has volunteered locally as a peer tutor and a youth soccer coach, the news release said.
“Henry was athletically dominant as a center mid,” Mount Mansfield coach Dustin Hess said in a statement. “He was one of the best players at maintaining possession of the ball and could spring attacks with dynamic passing and vision. His defensive instincts and background make him excellent on that side of the ball as well.”
Bacon has maintained an unweighted 4.12 GPA. He will play soccer as a postgraduate student at the Taft School in Connecticut this fall, according to the release.
Through Gatorade’s “Play it Forward” program, Bacon has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing. To learn more about the Gatorade Player of the Year program, visit playeroftheyear.gatorade.com.
