Australian PGA and Joburg Open picks

  • by

The DP World Tour Championship was completed on Sunday but it has not taken long for the action to get going again with the co-sanctioned Australian PGA Championship the highlight of this week’s golf package.

There should be a strong regional challenge at the Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane and most eyes will be on Open champion Cameron Smith, who is 7/2 to claim his third win in this tournament as he returns to action after the LIV season.

Former Masters champion Adam Scott, also a two-time winner, is next in the betting at 9/1 while defending champion Jediah Morgan, who triumphed by 11 shots last year, is 60/1.

Home hopeful Min Woo Lee and New Zealander Ryan Fox are also highly fancied at 12/1.

Course suits Scott to a tee

While Smith is favourite, his latest LIV performances were mixed and there could be more value to be had in backing Scott, who has played at Royal Queensland since he was a junior and is still a member at the Brisbane course.

But it is not just familiarity that is a big plus for him this week. Scott ended the PGA Tour season strongly, finishing fifth at both the FedEx St. Jude Classic and the BMW Championship.

He has rested since he was sixth at the Japan Open in October and could go well fresh.

Tip: Adam Scott to win outright @ 9/1 with bet365

Hiller has potential to shine

This is a stronger field than the one that assembled here at the beginning of the year, but there is still a great chance for up-and-coming players to make a big impression at a decent price.

New Zealander Daniel Hiller may fit the bill as he makes the step up from what was a decent year on the Challenge Tour to be a regular competitor on the DP World scene this term.

He won the Swiss Challenge in October, one of six top-10s on that tour last year, and after finishing 12th at the Portugal Masters he could figure highly at Royal Queensland.

Tip: Daniel Hillier to win outright @ 55/1 with bet365

Golf betting tips: Joburg Open

There will also be DP World Tour action in South Africa at the Joburg Open and organizers will be hoping for better luck this year after Thriston Lawrence won a tournament that was reduced to 36 holes by bad weather 12 months ago.

The action moves from Randpark to Houghton Golf Club and Lawrence in 14/1 to make a successful defense in a market that is dominated by home players.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout is 7/1 favorite while George Coetzee, who won this tournament in 2014 and has claimed three of his five DP World Tour titles in South Africa, is 12/1.

Bezuidenhout a worthy favourite

The 7,153-yard track should be comfortably tamed by players at this level and it is difficult to see Bezuidenhout not being a big factor.

A long hitter, the 28-year-old should be completely at home at Houghton and he has the desired accuracy off the tee too to make light work of this week’s assignment.

His confidence should be high after he finished fifth at the Nedbank Challenge two weeks ago and he should be able to get the 2023 season off to an ideal start.

Tip: Christiaan Bezuidenhout to win outright @ 7/1 with bet365

Van Tonder can be a factor

Daniel van Tonder has fallen down the world rankings in the past 12 months but he tends to save his best performances for his homeland and he could feature this week.

He won the South African Open this time last year, has eight victories on the local Sunshine Tour and is the holder of the 54-hole scoring record of 22 under par at this course, which he recorded in 2016.

Van Tonder was 34th at the Portugal Masters last time out, but he can be expected to perform a lot better closer to home.

Tip: Daniel van Tonder to win outright @ 40/1 with bet365
