The Diamondbacks are set to extend the contract of manager Torey Lovullo through the 2024 season, a source said, the third consecutive season Lovullo has been given a new one-year deal.
The contract is expected to be announced on Sunday.
Lovullo, 57, is in his seventh season with the Diamondbacks, making him the longest-tenured manager in club history. He owns a career record of 446-481.
Lovullo began his Diamondbacks career with three consecutive winning seasons, starting with a 93-win campaign in 2017 in which the club advanced to the division series.
He managed to survive the organization’s dismal 110-loss 2021 season as General Manager Mike Hazen refused to pin the blame on him for a year marred by injuries, underperformance and sloppy play.
The organization appears to be back on the upswing. After taking steps forward last year, the Diamondbacks are off to a terrific start to this season. They are tied with the Dodgers for both first place in the National League West and the best record in the league at 35-24.
Lovullo received a one-year extension in the final days of the 2020 season. Last August, the club extended him again through 2023, a deal that included a club option for 2024. It is not clear if this deal also includes an option for 2025.
