Arizona Diamondbacks-Philadelphia Phillies pitching matchups, updates for series opener

The Arizona Diamondbacks open their home series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Check back here for live updates of the game.

Diamondbacks LHP Tommy Henry (3-1, 4.37) vs. Phillies TBA.

Henry gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Nationals in his most recent start. He served up a first-inning grand slam to LF Stone Garrett, followed by three scoreless innings, then allowed a home run to RF Lane Thomas before departing with two on and one out. … It snapped what had been a sharp stretch for Henry in which he had allowed just 10 runs in 31 1/3 innings (2.87 ERA) in six outings (five starts). … Henry has held opposing hitters to a .189 average against his change-up, a pitch that gets whiffs on 31.3 percent of swings. … The Phillies have not named a starter, which could mean they will go with a bullpen game. They did that against the Diamondbacks when the teams played on May 23, with LHP Matt Strahm (two innings) starting before handing off to RHP Dylan Covey (five innings). … Covey worked an inning in relief on Saturday against the Dodgers. … Strahm threw an inning on Friday, his first appearance since June 3.

hot streak: How the Arizona Diamondbacks became baseball’s hottest team

What to know about the Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies have been playing well in recent days, making this a matchup of two hot teams. They entered their series finale against the Dodgers on Sunday looking to take two of three, which would be their seventh win in their past eight games. Still, they are hovering a little below .500, having yet to find the form that allowed them to go on a second-half run last year that took them all the way to the World Series. Their offense entered Sunday third-worst in the league with 4.2 runs per game while their pitching staff was right around the middle of the pack with a 4.44 ERA. RF Nick Castellanos had swung the bat well, hitting .314 with 21 doubles and seven homers, and DH Bryce Harper owned a .287/.382/.434 mark since returning from elbow surgery. SS Trea Turner still hasn’t gotten going, hitting just .213 with a .627 OPS since delivering a key homer to help the Phillies beat the Diamondbacks last month. RHP Zack Wheeler has been dominant in two of his past three starts, taking a no-hitter into the eighth the last time out. LHP Jose Alvarado returned from the injured list last week, giving the Phillies an important arm for their bullpen.
