Nelson fired 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball against the Tigers in Detroit on Saturday, allowing four hits and walking two while striking out four. … He has a 3.04 ERA in his past five starts, although he has only 15 strikeouts compared to 13 walks in 26 2/3 innings in that span. … Nelson does not have a whiff rate of greater than 26 percent on any of his pitches. … Nola is in his final season before hitting free agency, and thus far it has not been a banner platform year. He is allowing a few more home runs and striking out fewer batters than he had in the past few years, and has struggled to log consecutive strong starts. … He did not face the Diamondbacks last month in Philadelphia and has a surprising 8.41 ERA against them in four career outings. He allowed eight runs in four innings in a start against them last year. … Nola has a 33 percent swing-and-miss rate on his curveball, a pitch he throws 31 percent of the time, more than any of his other pitches. He also gets whiffs on his change-up (37.3 percent) and cutter (30.9 percent) although he does not throw those pitches as often.
