Apple iPhone: Tech experts warn millions of Apple users over background data collection

  • by

A new study suggests Apple could still be collecting data from its customers even when they have turned off analytics sharing.

The discovery was made by iOS developers Tommy Mysk and Talal Haj Bakry, from software company Mysk.

According to their report, Apple can still collect detailed information from you within its apps, even when you turn off tracking.

The developers claim Apple can track your every move in its pre-installed App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV, Books and Stocks apps.

“The level of detail is shocking for a company like Apple,” Mysk told Gizmodo.

“Opting-out or switching the personalization options off did not reduce the amount of detailed analytics that the app was sending.

“I switched all the possible options off, namely personalized ads, personalized recommendations, and sharing usage data and analytics.”

However, the researchers say it was only found in iOS 14.6.

“It’s unclear if Apple still collects analytics data in iOS 16,” the team shared in a tweet posted to their company account, Mysk.

They did state however that the behavior of the iOS 16 is “likely to be the same”.

Meanwhile, the Apple Device & Privacy support page states that it must have consent from the user to collect such information from devices.

“None of the collected information identifies you personally,” the page reads.

“Personal data is either not logged at all, is subject to privacy preserving techniques such as differential privacy, or is removed from any reports before they’re sent to Apple.”
