Amateur Golf: Gorans captures Eagle Creek Match Play Championship – West Central Tribune

WILLMAR — Matt Gorans emerged as the champion of the Eagle Creek Golf Club’s Match Play Championship on Sunday.

Goran beat Eric Means 5 and 3.

Gorans advanced earlier Sunday in the semifinals by beating Derek Dionne 4 and 3. Means needed a 19th-hole playoff to advance out of the semifinals, beating Joey Wisocki.

The tournament began Saturday with 16 players in the championship flight, 12 in the senior championship, eight in the consolation bracket, four in the first flight and four in the super senior championship.

Goran beat Deiken Carruthers 5 and 4 in the first round Saturday, then knocked off Chris Bennett 5 and 3 in the field of eight.

Means advanced Saturday by beating Pete Hannig 2 Up in the first round, then scoring a 2 Up win over Jim Anderson.

Aden Jacobson won the men’s consolation title, beating Hannig 1 Up.

In the Senior Championship, Mike Slette took on Jim Schammel. Slette beat Schammel 1 Up.

Slette advanced to the finals after beating Gordy Lindblad 6 and 5. Schammel got into the finals after beating Clark Vollan 3 and 1.

Stan Carlson was the winner in the Super Senior Championship over Gary Hern, 3 and 2. Carlson made the finals after beating Mike Schroeder 1 Up. Hern advanced against Doug Linblad, 4 and 3.

Shawn Bakke and Adam Happe played for the Men’s First Flight Championship. They were tied through 18 holes.
