Virginia Tech has named Stephanie Overton ’95 senior director of communications for the Office of the Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer, effective Sept. 12.
This new communications role bridges the operations and administration enterprises within Virginia Tech. Overton will serve as the communications lead on strategic university operations initiatives and provide oversight that will enhance information and messages shared with Virginia Tech and the broader community.
Currently, Chris Kiwus serves as interim senior vice president and chief business officer and is responsible for the day-to-day management of services required to meet the university’s teaching, research, and outreach mission.
Reporting to both the interim senior vice president and the senior associate vice president for University Relations, Overton will align communications and marketing initiatives for all divisions within the operations and business enterprise with those of the entire university.
“Given the scope of the role of the senior vice president and the critical need to align and coordinate the messages across the division and with campus and the community, I am thrilled to have Stephanie join us,” Kiwus said. “She will lead a coordinated communications team in the financial and operational enterprises of the university that is strategically aligned to the president through University Relations.”
Overton’s expertise in communications spans over 25 years in higher education and the private sector. She joins Virginia Tech from Radford University, where she served as director of advancement communications since 2018 and oversaw web/digital communications, publications, and marketing for the Office of Advancement. She also led strategic communications and planning initiatives for the university’s comprehensive campaign.
“It’s an honor to return to my alma mater at such an exciting time of growth and innovation. I look forward to blending my communications experience and knowledge of Virginia Tech to advance the mission of the division and university,” said Overton. “As always, it’s a great time to be a Hokie, and I look forward to partnering with our teams across campus to support Virginia Tech’s teaching, research, and outreach missions.”
Overton graduated from Virginia Tech in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree from what is now the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences with concentrations in English, sociology, and technology education.
