After nine years, Paradox Interactive and developer Triumph Studios have officially confirmed a new chapter in the Age of Wonders series. Launching on May 2 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Age of Wonders 4 will once again blend 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat within a fantasy realm.
Set in a land where powerful wizard-kings reign as gods, you will rise up to challenge them by using magic to evolve and enhance their forces. For the first time in the series, you’ll be able to create your own custom factions, while other features include the ability to combine bodily forms, societal traits, and arcane powers. By unlocking tomes of magic, armies can physically change as they morph into angelic beings or agents of chaos.
Like the previous games in the series, Age of Wonders 4 will contain a mix of deadly diplomacy, strategy, and role-playing elements that reflect your personal adventure, and your creations may even appear as potential rivals or allies in subsequent games.
Paradox says that Age of Wonders 4 will contain a wide variety of empires, units, and environments, as well as a more open-ended and mod-friendly design to keep the experience as replayable as possible, while a new event system will add ” unexpected” levels of storytelling that aren’t usually seen in 4X games.
2023 is turning out to be a great year for the revival of classic PC strategy games. In addition to Age of Wonders 4, Homeworld 3 is scheduled to arrive in the first half of the year, and Company of Heroes 3 will be establishing a beachhead on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S later in 2023.
