Ben Lomond High’s girls soccer team won a playoff game Saturday for the first time since 2013 and did it in resounding fashion.
Melanie Solis scored a hat trick and set up another goal as the No. 14 Scots mercy-ruled no. 19 American Leadership Academy 8-0 to advance to Wednesday’s second-round game at No. 3 Morgan.
Twenty seconds of game time separated Ben Lomond’s (5-11) first two goals. Ariana Tiptrap scored with the first shot of the game, then Alex Chadwick converted a penalty kick.
Solis bagged two goals for a 4-0 halftime lead. It could’ve been higher, as the Scots hit shot after shot at the ALA goal, but the Eagles’ goalkeeper made dozens of saves and kept shots out.
Like the first half, Ben Lomond had two quick goals early in the second half and Solis had a foot in both of them. Her cross set up Shakira Nolasco for a one-time shot, then Solis scored a minute later to make the score 6-0.
Senior BrynLeigh Peterson added a one-time goal in the 56th minute, which was her first varsity goal, according to coach Sarah Espinoza. Liptrap, who had earlier opened the scoring with the early goal, ended the scoring as well as the game with a long, low shot in the 65th minute.
6A STATE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Frey’s win was also the fifth straight Region 1 triumph at No. 1 singles following Jane Dunyon in 2021 and Weber’s Jacque Dunyon from 2018-20.
Layton High junior Victoria Cooksey won the no. 2 singles state title with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over West High’s Riya Soneji. At no. 3 singles, Layton sophomore Tana Christopulos swept Skyridge’s Andi Armstrong 6-1, 6-2 to win the title.
