Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabers (2-1-0) haven’t visited the postseason in more than a decade, making their last trip in 2011, and haven’t won a series since 2007. Buffalo’s last winning record came in 2011-12. As coach Don Granato enters his second season.

The Penguins have lost two in a row this preseason, including a 6-2 thumping by the Red Wings on Tuesday. Brock McGinn and Bryan Rust had the goals for Pittsburgh. The Sabers lost at Columbus on Wednesday 4-1, with Chase Priskie scoring their only goal in the second period.
The Penguins signed former Tampa Bay defenseman Jan Rutta to a three-year deal and picked up veteran blueliner Jeff Petry and young center Ryan Poehling from the Canadiens. But they also re-signed veterans Casey DeSmith, Kris Letang, Richard Rakell, Evgeni Malkin and Rust to keep their core intact.
Buffalo continued its rebuild, signing free agent goalie Eric Comrie from Winnipeg and adding veteran defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin from Toronto.
