“Golf is the only sport on the planet where pretty much everybody can play,” says Tommy Fleetwood, who’s been driving, pitching and putting golf balls professionally since 2010 when he was 19.
During that time, the Brit has enjoyed the highs and lows of the great game. He’s won and lost consecutive Ryder Cups, he’s come agonizingly close to winning two major championships and has climbed as high as ninth in the world.
Today, it’s early September and we are talking to Tommy Fleetwood from the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth. As well as finding out his stance on golf’s current state of affairs that keep dominating the headlines, we’re keen to know more about TAG Heuer’s new Connected E4 Golf smartwatch. It’s no secret that wearable tech has revolutionized the way we track our fitness and training, but can a watch actually improve your golf game?
With two new models in 42mm and 45mm, features like a built-in magnetic ball marker, drive shot tracking, digital scorekeeping and an ability to fine-tune your next shot based on data collected all sound impressive, but hearing from Fleetwood, who wears one religiously, will surely provide the home truths we’re looking for. Here’s what he has to say.
On the benefits of playing golf
I’m a massive believer in the game, I support the game at every level and I know what good the game can do, whether that be physically, mentally, for friendships or careers. It is good to see that it is growing throughout all ages, where there are more young people playing now.
On why golf is becoming more popular
It’s not an old man’s sport anymore. It started changing when Tiger Woods was going on his rampage of being the greatest golfer of all time but for a lot of other sports stars golf is their favorite pastime sport and that helps too. I also think the game has stronger, better athletes than it’s ever had and it’s also getting more funky, cool characters and that’s attracting more exciting brands who want to get involved in golf.
