Gophers Head into NHL Camps

MINNEAPOLIS – With the start of the 2022-23 National Hockey League season rapidly approaching, the University of Minnesota had 30 former players enter training camps around the league.

There is a player on 20 different NHL camp rosters of the 32-team league, including three with the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche (Erik Johnson, Ben MeyersSampo Ranta) and three with the Winnipeg Jets (Chaz LuciusNate Schmidt, Blake Wheeler).

A total of 25 players saw the ice in an NHL game during the 2021-22 season, tied for the most of any collegiate program in the nation, playing for 16 different organizations. The 25 former Gophers accounted for 540 total points with 161 goals and 379 assists, while adding 22 points during the playoffs.

Erik Johnson, the highest player drafted in program history, became the 12th former Minnesota player to hoist the Stanley Cup in June as a defenseman for the Avalanche.
